Options Trading Keeps Setting Records

Options trading keeps getting bigger.

Through August 2026, U.S. listed options averaged 70.5 million contracts per day, according to OCC data.

That is up 22.7% from the same point in 2025.

The growth is not evenly spread across the market.

Equity options are still the largest category, averaging 35.2 million contracts per day. But they are growing more slowly, up 13% year over year.

The faster growth is coming from ETF and index options.

ETF options averaged 29.1 million contracts per day through August, up 35.1% from last year. Index options averaged 6.2 million contracts per day, up 30.3%.

ETF and index options are tied to broader market exposure, hedging, short-term trading, volatility positioning, and portfolio-level flows.

Options have become one of the main ways investors express views on the market. Traders use them to bet on direction, hedge portfolios, sell volatility, target specific events, or trade intraday moves with more precision than the underlying asset.

The investor question is what this does to markets when volume keeps rising. More options activity can deepen liquidity and give investors more tools. It can also make dealer hedging, expiration dates, volatility flows, and positioning more important for short-term market moves.

That is especially true when the fastest-growing categories are ETF and index options, because those products are tied directly to the biggest benchmarks and most traded market vehicles.

The chart also says something about investor behavior.

Even after years of growth, options activity is still accelerating. Volatility products, same-day expirations, ETF options, and index options have made options trading a normal part of the market rather than a niche corner of it.

The result is a market where the options layer matters more than it used to.
